3 Simple Steps To Success
How many of us have made New Year resolutions? Or listened to a motivational speaker, got fired up and made grand plans for the future? Then in a couple of days/weeks, you find yourself back at ‘square one’ dealing with the daily grind.
What happened to the fire, the enthusiasm that got you moving? And why didn’t it last?
Its due to one main factor. There was no foundation for the goal you were aiming for. It was just a passing thought that needed to be grounded in reality for it to become real.
Imagine a skyscraper being built without a strong foundation. Without strong supports reaching far into the ground to give it stability. When the wind blows strongly and the rain comes down hard, it will sway from side to side until it topples over and crashes.
But with strong solid supports driven deep into the ground, the skyscraper can reach up to the clouds with full confidence in its ability to weather anything that is thrown at it.
So how do you create foundations for your dreams and goals?
1) Evaluate what area you want to work on. What is it that you want to achieve? Don’t say “I’ll like to be rich.” Or “I’ll like to go on a long vacation.” Be specific. Try “I want to earn $1million in 5years.” Or “I want to bring my family for a Disney World vacation in 2 years.”
Notice that I’m given specific goals with a time frame attached. This is what will help make the goal work. Firstly, you know exactly what you’re striving for. Its not a vague vision of the future but a crystal clear one.
2) Break up the main goal into bite-sized steps. Set yourself mini goals that together will bring you to your main goal. Working towards manageable goals will allow you to make progress much faster than you would expect.
Mini goals should be things that you can safely say you *can* achieve. Don’t put long term deadlines on these goals… look at them as weekly, fortnightly or even daily goals.
If you have problems fulfilling them… decide to do things for 15 minutes at a time. Set your timer. Trust me, 15 minutes isn’t a long and you’d be amazed what can be accomplished. So instead of looking at hours of work ahead, say you’ll do such and such for 15 minutes and then you’ll take a break. After that break, either come back and work on the same project again or work on something else. With this pattern, you won’t get bored or tired with your work.
3) Remind yourself of your plans. Put up your main goal in a prominent place near where you work. (I’ve got mine right above my monitor screen) You can print it out in words although I find pictures more effective.
Then put your individual goals down on your calendar. Again, have the calendar somewhere visible and easily accessible. I use a store-bought calendar with large boxes that I can write in. Ticking off my goals each day gives the satisfaction of a job well done.
Don’t underestimate the feelings of small tasks accomplished. Small tasks add up to the final goal! Just like small grains of sand make large buildings.
With your foundation in place, reaching your goals is easily achievable because you would have plans in place to guide you to the target. Work on your foundation, don’t take shortcuts and all your dreams will become reality.
